THE CONCEPT

“Entre-deux” is a performance presented at the Musée de la lutherie et de l'archèterie française in spring 2024. For a duration of 40 minutes, it brings together a dancer and a luthier among instruments and tools from the lutherie workshop.

On stage, the luthier works at his bench. Nearby, the dancer observes, draws inspiration, and engages in a dance whose only music is randomly created by the sounds of the tools. Gradually, harmonies, rhythms, and patterns begin to emerge. From one body to another, the audience witnesses the transformation of professional gestures into neutral gestures, and then their evolution towards a shared choreographic horizon.

The performance is followed by a discussion with the audience, surrounded by wood shavings.

OBJECTIVES

  • To offer a reflection on gesture, taking the luthier’s craft as a reference

  • To reveal the creative process at its very beginning

  • To raise audience awareness of the poetic transformation of gesture, from working gesture to choreographic gesture

CONTEXT

From 2023 to 2026, the L’aéronef company, directed by Anne Marion, is in residence in Mirecourt at the Museum of French Lutherie and Bow Making.

Through the project A Gesture of One’s Own, the company aims to promote a practice-based reflection on gesture (craft, everyday, civic, intimate, professional, emotional, health-related, or symbolic gestures), using the luthier’s gesture as a reference point.

The goal is to renew the material of its artistic creation and, ultimately, to invent an innovative participatory format that would function as a “museum of gesture”. It is within this residency that the performance was created.
