Through a wide range of portraits and testimonies, this documentary traces and examines the channels through which knowledge and craftsmanship in violin making and bow making have been passed down, originating from Mirecourt.

In 2025, Laura Taubman met around thirty violin makers and bow makers who agreed to speak on camera about their training, their careers, and their vision of their craft and its transmission.

With great humanity, this documentary immerses us in the memories, reflections, and hopes of violin makers and bow makers who have followed different paths, yet whose destinies are united through their connection to Mirecourt…

TAUBMAN

Born in Paris in 1987, Laura Taubman is a filmmaker-anthropologist (PhD), director, cinematographer and editor. For more than ten years, Laura has explored documentary cinema in all its forms, from creative documentaries and social science research films to more experimental practices. Technically self-sufficient, she has directed and edited numerous films in various languages, both in France and abroad. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). Her doctoral thesis, defended in December 2020, examined the social implications of power and educational issues within a self-managed public school. This research resulted in both a film, *Pas Sage* — a filmed ethnography covering one school year — and a written dissertation. She also composes music for cinema, seeking to extend her narratives through sound. Alongside her filmmaking practice, she teaches screenwriting, aesthetics, documentary directing and visual anthropology in film schools and at the University of Toulon. In 2025, she was commissioned by the Musée de Mirecourt to direct a documentary on the transmission of violin-making and bow-making knowledge and craftsmanship originating from Mirecourt.
